Thor 3

Just want to spread some of the rumors from across the Interweb...

Previously Natalie Portman in an August 2013 interview with E Online dropped the first hint of the Third Thor film.     She latter confirms that she has/is under contract for a third film.   While the interview suggests that her Co-Star Sir Anthony Hopkins "would love to do a third film" Anthony himself didn't seem to keen when interviewed in November.
I should point out it appears that both Sir Anthony Hopkins and Rene Russo signed on for two movies while many of the other cast members signed on for three.

In January it was confirmed that Thor 3 was in the works.

Last week we learned from Kevin Feige that Thanos has been cast.

Additionally there has been an uptick in chatter on a 3rd Thor Movie amongst the usual cast of characters on the interweb that usually know something....

This leads me to believe that the third Thor Movie has been slated for August/Fall 2017.

Here is the schedule as we know it to be at the moment.
Aug 2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy
May 2015 - Avengers: Age of Ultron
Aug 2015 - Ant-Man
May 2016 - Captain America 3
Aug 2016 - Rumored to be Dr. Strange
May 2017 - Rumored to be Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Aug 2017 - Thor 3
May 2018 - Avengers: The Infinity War

This doesn't fit nicely into Marvel's pattern of one existing franchise with a new franchise per year, but those according to Disney are more like Guidelines.

However it does provide the late fill leading up to the third Avengers ensemble film, rumored to be the Infinity War or something similar with Thanos the mad god as the primary villain.

Why Ragnarok?

The Ragnarok story line is one of the more popular Thor storylines, twice.
The first story line involves Tony Stark (maybe you have heard of Iron-Man) cloning a missing Thor and using the Cyborg during the Civil War.   This character is known as Ragnarok.   With the Civil War Story Line probably off limits to Marvel Studios (hard to have the fight when another studio controls the other leaders) I doubt we will see this story line.

The second story line, slightly older involves the destruction of Asgard and the loss of the Asgardians.   The Ragnarok story line is the conclusion of Thor Vol 1. in the Comics (1966-1996).

The other option for this movie is the Fire Lord Surtur from the world of fire (which appears in the Thor: The Dark World montage of other worlds) as the primary antagonist.

Sigyn
In the Comic book universe on several occasion while the All-Father Odin is within the Odinsleep Loki has taken the throne, hum isn't that how we left with Thor: The Dark World?

The classic story continues with Loki attempting to ally himself with Lord Surtur, the great fire demon Surtur and Dormammu, a mystical demon lord from the other realms who is the mastermind of many of schemes against Doctor Strange.

The first attempt at this was stopped by Thor...   A later attempt leads to the destruction of Asgard.

I forget all the details but Loki's wife Sigyn is involved in the scheme as well as Lorelei and Hel.      We have already been introduced to Lorelei in Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.  and had a reference to Hel or at least the domain in Thor: The Dark World.

What's has been interesting so far however is the lack of introduction to the Enchantress, Amora, a troublesome Asgardian who desire for personal pleasure and power often causes issues for Thor and the other Avengers.  It should be added that Lorelei is the young sister of Amora in the Comic Universe.

The other Asgardians that has yet to make an appearance or reference to is Brunhilde, The Valkyrie, who often is in conflict with Amora.   Balder is one of the defenders of Asguard we have not seen and whose death  was foretold as the beginning of Ragnarok.

There are a few (many) secondary characters of course from the Thor / Asguardian  universe that we haven't seen but for the most part these characters are tertiary at best.
