Review - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

At 7 PM central on Thursday December 17th I caught a midnight showing of Friday's release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - SWTFA for short.   Yeah, it's complicated.
Here's the deal.  I would like to make this review as spoiler free as possible, but it wouldn't be a very good review.  There will be some references to the movie and some will be contextual, but if you haven't seen the film you have been warned everything in here is a potential spoiler.

In case you missed the warning spoilers. I am going to talk about what happens in the movie.  If you are not apart of the 32 Million Americans who saw this movie already and care about what happens stop reading.   You have been warned.

Quick Commentary

Reviews of the SWTFA by movie going masses probably mirror that of the critics.   Five percent of the audience are probably not happy with the film (thumbs down), ten to fifteen percent will give the film mixed reviews and the remaining eighty to eighty-five percent will give the movie a solid thumbs up and better.

One of my favorite review was from a gentlemen who usually reviews Shakespeare's plays in Europe, in which he basically wrote, not my cup of tea but my boss said I had to review the film.  He of course is not in the 95% of reviewers that generally like the movie.

Regardless of where most reviewers came down I think they all have some very valid points.   I clearly fall into the ten to fifteen percent of people who have very mixed emotions about this film.  I liked the film overall and think the people who put the film together did a fairly decent job; however I think this film could have been galactically awesome had circumstances allowed it.

I am going to rip into the heart of this movie, not because I think it was a bad movie, rather because it teetered on greatness and fell short.  Its like looking at the silver medal and thinking about how you lost gold rather than what an achievement a silver medal is.

The Bean Counters at Disney!

The biggest flaw to SWTFA is most likely directly pointed at the actuaries in Disney's accounting office.   To maximize profit the film needed to fit into a very tight time window.   If you include the trailers at the beginning of the movie, the public service like commercials for the theater, the movie itself, and the amount of time to change over a theater to show the movie again (people out, clean, people in) you have approximately 3 hours if you want to show the film 5 times per day per screen.    In that three hours you have 2 hours and 15 minutes for the film.   SWTFA clocks in at 2 hours and 16 minutes.  Needless to say there is not a whole lot of additional time, if any at all, to keep SWTFA in that 3 hour window needed to show a movie 5 times.   Even one or two additional minutes of film could have resulted in the window being 3 hours and 15 minutes and reducing the number of showings to 4 at some/many or all screens depending on who you talk to.

How does that decision effect the movie?   It is clearly evident in the editing of the film.  Numerous scenes lack flow within the film.  One in particular during the light of the dying sun,  the scene, the music score and the importance of the act do not necessarily sync properly.  Through out the movie there a dozen plus scenes in which a few seconds here and there seemed to be shaved off each of them.
The transition from one scene to the next in many instances is abrupt and lacks the smoothness typical of Oscar winning films; for the lack of a better way to describe it.  A few were done by choice others seemed forced.
These edits clearly effect the ebbs and flow of the film.

The editing appeared to effect the timing of the score; like the score was written for a slightly longer movie and then edited to fit the shorter box.

Beyond the Ebb and Flow of the film there are several entire scenes removed from the final cut.  There is some question on when many of the scenes were cut from the movie, but three in particular have been identified.

The movie was to originally open with the Battle of Jakku.  The battle occurs 1 year and 4 days after the battle of Endor, in the Star Wars timeline and was Grand Admiral Akbar's greatest victory.   To me personally that 5 minutes worth of film should have better connected the original trilogy with the latest films and provided much context for the films backstory.
A second scene provided back ground on Captain Phasma and the rise of the First Order.
A third scene involved Chewbacca and Rey and explained why Chewbacca and Rey became a "team" at the end of the film.
Those are three scenes that I know of that were left on the cutting room floor, what other scenes are there?   J.J. Abrams has acknowledged that 20 minutes of near completed film was cut to bring the film down to 2 hours and 16 minutes.   Another 40 minutes worth of story was filmed, so is it a 60 minutes or 40 minutes of additional story?

Definition of Insanity!

It is never explained why the First Order is attempting to use the same blue print to control the Galaxy as the Empire, which failed, twice.   It is for all intensive purposes a huge plot hole large enough to fly a Super Star Destroyer sideways.

There are a number of plot holes in the film, the biggest one being its basically a copy of two films smashed together.

Its all about the Characters.

We are introduced to some new characters and reintroduced to some old characters.   Not everyone of these characters works in this film; and for different reasons.

Before jumping into this on a deeper level I have a disclaimer to put out.  I have read all of the former cannon materials, supposed treatments of the final trilogy of movies by George Lucas, and pieced together things that were cut from this movie from all the interviews everyone has done.   So I am not just talking about what's on the film, but in many cases what isn't.
In the original script (supposedly it was changed after principal filming was concluded) Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, sacrificed himself by crashing his X-Wing into the Starkiller base to destabilize the weapon.   When the end of the story was changed it didn't change his story arc during the movie.   I understand why he wasn't killed off but it should of had a ripple effect through the story, it didn't.  As he is now a "principal" character he is very much under utilized through out the movie.   I am in many ways reminded of Wedge Antillies in the original trilogy.

FN-2187 - aka Finn - played by John Boyega is the most complete character in the film.  I wouldn't be shocked to discover that I some of the earlier drafts of the film he was the primary character on who the story centered upon.

Rey - aka Mary Sue - played by Daisy Ridley.  Here is the deal, if Finn was the most complete character in this film, Rey is the most incomplete.  Don't get me wrong that may be done on purpose so it could be explored in the next films, but it was really disheartening considering she became the primary vehicle in telling this story.
So why did I call he a Mary Sue?   Let start by explaining what a Mary Sue is in terms of writing.  A Mary Sue (or Gary Sue if the character is male) is a character inserted into a story that is too perfect, too good at everything.   These characters are extremely popular in Fan Fiction in which the author inserts a perfect copy of themselves into a story.  What isn't she good at?
Rey is so good at everything, her character is never truly at risk. This is very much unlike the original trilogy where everyone is always at risk and we bond with those characters because they appear more human.

Ben Solo - Kylo Ren - This is a wonderfully complicated character that almost works perfectly.  The portrayal of this character is so close to perfect it makes the flaws much more apparent.
To begin with lets start with the name.  Jacen Solo is the character in the books who becomes a Sith Lord (Darth Sideous) and changing his name to Ben distracts from the character.   I understand that they are changing the continuum and wanted to move away from what was formerly cannon, but the name change gnaws at me.
They have all but said the character suffers from a Multiple Personality disorder, but don't quite go that far in the film.  If the character does than do it, if he doesn't well you went too far in demonstrating it.  Like so many things in the film you end up in the grey area when either black or white would have been better.

Han Solo, if Poe Dameron was underutilized during the film than the opposite is very true for Harrison Ford's character, Han Solo, who is over utilized.  I get it that the story became Han Solo centric when the powers that be decided to kill off Han Solo.   The problem is the film isn't and Han Solo is forced upon us.  There are a number of very good scenes with Han Solo, but too many are simply there for the character to be on the screen as if too remind us how wonderful he is.   In my first viewing I uttered he was a dead-man when he finally hugged Leia.

Each of those characters have a unique and fairly complicated story arc in this film.  It is incredibly ambitious of a filmmaker to try and tell two story arcs in a single film, you could argue that Peter Jackson is one of the only successful filmmakers to do it recently with Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.  Here J.J. Abrams is telling four major story arcs and three or four minor story arcs interwoven into a single movie.   SWTFA is mostly successful in telling these various stories.

General Hux, Captain Phasma, why are they important to the story?  Too little is known about these characters and it also touches upon what we know about the Knights of Ren?

Failed Cliff Hanger!

WTF was with the end of the movie?
Why in the name of the force did the Rebel Alliance who has been looking for Luke Skywalker for years allow Rey and Chewbacca to go and find him?  You know two characters who literally walked into their alliance two days prior?
And that final scene, oh how it doesn't work in film.   Clearly a TV guy wrote that ending because it does work on that medium but not in Movies.   It frustrates movie audiences.   Further it deprived the audience of that moment to clap and cheer.   People kept waiting around for more.   It may have worked as a post credit scene.

Unanswered Questions?

Many sites have compiled lists of unanswered questions ranging from "who is Lor San Tekka?" and "what is the division of power in the galaxy?" Maybe in another post I will break down the questions but the problem remains that there are just too many simple questions that should have been answered.

Oscar worthy?

Best Picture - Sure to be nominated.  The only category with ten nominations I doubt Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be excluded simply because of the fact it could draw 10 million more viewers to the show.

Best Director - With only five directors to be on the ballot I think chances are J.J. Abrams will not be nominated.   Ridley Scott (The Martian), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), and Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) are shoe ins for the ballot.   The remaining two spots sees Todd Haynes (Carol), Alejandro Inarritu (Revenant), Ryan Coogler (Creed) and Adam McKay (The Big Short) duking it out.

Best Actress - Daisy Ridley performance as Rey in most years would easily garner a nomination and in some years a much closer look.   However this is not most years and just like Best Director category the Best Actress category is stacked with four shoe ins for the nominations and four or five deserving actresses vying for the fifth nomination.

Best Actor in a supporting role - Harrison Ford will receive a lot of consideration for the award.  I would only be mildly surprised if he receives a nomination but not shocked.  Out of the all the major categories I feel this is the weakest in terms of depth this year.

Best Score - John Williams will surely be nominated for what many people believe is his last major project.  With a long history with the academy and many wins and more nominations it is not inconceivable that this score wins one last award for John Williams.

Screenplay - The first problem is what category does this film belong in, original or adapted?   That confusion alone will be enough to keep it from being nominated.

Lesser Categories
Cinematography - Editing - Sound - Costume Design - Production Design - Visual Effects - Hairstyling/Makeup - The academy in recent years has liked more indie style films than large scale epics in almost every one of these instances.  Unless their is a change of heart in the voting booth this year I do not see SWTFA receiving more than a token award.

Fantastic Four in name only

Generally I am referred to a crumdgeon when it comes to my views on films.   You know that 85 year old crusty grandfather, with an ultra bad attitude.   It get it from father, Grumpy, himself.   So people expect me to shred "bad" movies.   In many cases I get very frustrated because film makers have decent concepts and ideas but the follow through on them fails.

I understood what Tim Story was tasked to do back in 2005 for the "Fantastic Four".  He was supposed to make a family friendly superhero movie with a limited budget under the constraints that the CGI was not able to keep up with the concepts from the comic books.

Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg, and the rest of the production staff were tasked with creating more realistic grounded version of the elder superhero group that brings both old and new viewers to the theater.

Much like Brett Ratner and Gavin Hood, Josh Trank is going to be skewered for this film, the only difference I think, if any of the rumors are even partially true, Josh Trank deserves to be cashiered.   The revisioning of the Fantastic Four doesn't work.   The 2015 movie is currently the worst reviewed film of 2015, and when additional reviews roll in I expect its whooping 9% rating to take a nose dive.

The movie had the potential to be a decent Sci-Fi film, if it would have changed its title and the than removed any reference to the Fantastic Four.   It is an interesting concept and the first 75 minutes of the film are okay, a little slow but not bad.   The film falls apart however as the film transitions from an interesting sci-Fi film to superhero film.   It lacks the action, the comedy, the inside jokes, and what is expected from good superhero film.

The film clearly lacks pacing, whether that issue is from the script, directing, cinematography or editing I will let you choose.  I lean on the first two and think the latter two were brought along for the ride.

There are problems with the acting, or is it directing through out the film.  Clearly the principal characters were put in boxes and they ended up forcing many scenes with the score attempting to create the emotion rather than the actors.   Having seen these actors in other films I know they have the ability so I again lean towards the direction as the issue.

The question for the critics, both professional and amateur alike, is whether you are looking at this as a independent film, or a Fantastic Four film based upon the comics.  I never once bought these actors as Fantastic Four and I doubt the audience will either.

Spider-Man Cast - Director Named

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios Find Their 'Spider-Man' Star and Director
Tom Holland Cast as the Web-Slinger, Jon Watts to Direct the Next Spider-Man Adventure.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of "Cop Car," the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in "The Impossible," “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming "In the Heart of the Sea," and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.  I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

State of Film Franchises Moving Forward - DC

The Justice League of America
DC Universe
Warner Bros. has announced a schedule through 2020 of ten movies set with the DC Comics Universe, starting with next springs Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and concluding with Green Lantern in 2020.

It's ambitious, to say the least, and it is clearly an attempt to emulate the success of rival Marvel Studios.   The question on every ones mind, okay would you accept the bloggers' minds, is will Warner Bros. be successful?

As a blogger I feel it is my necessity to define what would be successful for Warner Bros.
As a business the most important key stats are on the financial side of the house.  Success is measured in four key areas; Return on Investment, Opening Domestic Box Office, Domestic Box Office, and Worldwide Box Office.
There is also critical successes and audience success both are measures of how well the respective groups receive the film.

Man of Steel courtesy impawards.com
As Warner Bros is attempting to emulate Marvel Studios what are Marvels Bench Marks.
Return on Investment - 290%
Opening Domestic Box Office - $98 Million
Domestic Box Office - $294 Million
World Wide Box Office - $610 Million
Critical Success - 78 (out of 100)
Audience Success - 85 (out of 100)

The First Movie Man of Steel generally meets the goals financially but for all intensive purposes failed both critically and with the audience.   The problem is Superman is DC's Iron Man supposed to be something to build the franchise around.  The next movie Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice has dealt with a lot of negativity from casting choices to leaked images to delays.     It is not inspiring confidence.

From behind the scenes more stories of lack of clear leadership, mistrust and exploitation of development staff continue to erode faith in Warner Bros.

Unlike Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige there is no one person in charge of the DC Cinematic Universe.   Each movie is an independent entity with no check and balances between them as a whole.  Working in such a vacuum has created a system of mistrust between the various development teams at Warner Bros.  Staff from one film is apparently less willing to work with another film.

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice
courtesy impawards.com
All that said it is a story that recently made a small ripple that bothers me.   It appears the Warner Bros. is creating an open competition between various groups, without actually telling the competitors.  I real live Rat Race.   Made worse by the fact that Warner Bros is making it unequal challenges between the various groups.   A writer speaking anonymously suggested that at least three groups were brought in to write a first draft of a script for a movie.   Each group was given various requirements for the scripts once the draft were collected one (or more) groups were eliminated and various elements of all the scripts became requirements for the rewrites.   As long as everyone knows what's going on no one really should have a problem for this; however according to the source that is clearly not the case.    This transgression is apparently making it harder to woo talent to work on the development of new movies.

There are many fans out there that would like to see a real competitor to Marvel Cinematic Universe dominance.   Recent statements by Marvel indicating that they have no intent to go "dark" has given the DC Universe an in to be competitive.

The Cast of the Suicide Squad - courtesy Warner Bros.
In my opinion if Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice received solid marks from the fans and goes on to be a very successful movie financially, in the Iron Man 3 level of successful, the issues at Warner Bros. will quickly be forgotten, at this point I have a hard time believing Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice will out perform Man of Steel, which throws a huge wrench into the works.

The third movie in the DC Comic Book Universe, Suicide Squad is already being filmed and the information, leaks and images so far that have shown up on the interweb have meet very mixed reviews from the fan base.

State of Film Franchises Moving Forward - Valiant

Bloodshot

Valiant
Sony Pictures Entertainment recently signed a five movie deal with Valiant Entertainment to bring five linked movies to the screen from Valiant's comic book titles.

The first film, Bloodshot, is being directed by same duo that brought us John Wick, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, and being produced by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class).    Bloodshot is about a shape shifting super soldier who has been brought back from the dead to continue to kick ass and forget about taking names.

No one is officially attached to direct or produce the second film Harbringer, a film about a runaway with psychic abilities who comes into conflict with the Harbringer Foundation.
Both films are scheduled to have sequels before colliding in Avenger style crossover film to conclude the story line.

Thomas Rothman, the new man in charge at Sony Picture Entertainment [SPE] is known as a penny pincher and hands on executive.  The deal with Valiant Entertainment clearly allows SPE to build a comic universe to compete against Disney, 20th Century Fox and Universal without throwing down large sums of money.

With the duo of David Leitch and Chad Stahelski directing and Michael Vaughn producing its pretty clear at this point that SPE intends these movies to be at a minimum a very hard core PG-13 if not rated R, my guess is the latter of those two choices.   Rated R movies typically are less expensive to produce however the potential at the box office is greatly reduced.

Where would Avengers: Age of Ultron fit into the 2015 Marvel Film

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

Avengers: Age of Ultron has been released now for two weeks domestically and three weeks in many international markets, so as an exercise in fun where would it be placed in my 2015 Marvel Film Rankings.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Released 2015
Final Score: 31/35
Jeff: 32/35
Critics: 26/35
Audience: 32/34
Rating 4/35

When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's Mightiest Heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans.

What the critics said: Exuberant and eye-popping, Avengers: Age of Ultron serves as an overstuffed but mostly satisfying sequel, reuniting its predecessor's unwieldy cast with a few new additions and a worthy foe.

What I said: A film that probably will be better appreciated a year from now than it is today.

For the purpose of this placement film I made a couple of assumptions, first I figured the domestic box office to be in the neighborhood of $540 Million, which is pretty close to what the current formulas are suggesting after 10 days.  I also am working off the formulas that this film would make $900 Million internationally.  So I may be a little heavy domestically and a little light internationally but with its place in market I have lots of leeway before it upsets the apple cart.
Audience reviews of the film have improved over the past week, to me this is an indication that after second viewings some of the more harsh criticisms are falling away.   The movie has ticked up 3% in the past week but it needs to gain an average of 3% more on the two of the four audience trackers to make a difference.   That's a hard number to reach at this point.
Since it release additional critics reviews have stepped down almost a full 2 points however again it needs to move another 2 full points across the total critic rating to drop and almost 5 points to move up.
Even though I have some serious criticisms of the film, I think it is technically strong enough to be in the top five, slotted above Guardians of the Galaxy but below X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men, and The Avengers.

Hulk to appear in Captain America: Civil War

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , ,

An interesting tweet from Mark Ruffalo, is he suggesting that Bruce Banner and maybe the Hulk will appear in the forth coming Captain America: Civil War film or that someone else is or that he is going to the after party...  Well I know what my choice is.

Spoiler Alert.   At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron the Hulk meekly sits in a Quinjet as it flies away from the destruction in the aftermath of the film.

William Hurt (Incredible Hulk) has signed on to reprise his role as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, a character that has hunted the Hulk for years in the comics.  No word on whether Liv Tyler (Incredible Hulk) or Jennifer Connelly (Hulk) may reprise their role as Betty Ross, Bruce Banner's love interest.

X-Men: The New Mutants

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , ,

A Deadline exclusive yesterday announced that 20th Century Fox has signed The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone to direct a X-Men spin-off X-Men: The New Mutants.

The Fault in Our Stars was a surprise hit of 2014, the movie made on a shoestring budget of $12 Million earned $307 Million world wide and stared breakout actors Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff all of whom have been eyed for multiple roles within the over arching Marvel Cinematic Universe.   Shailene Woodley actually filmed multiple scenes as Mary Jane Watson for the Amazing Spider-Man 2; however all of her scenes were cut from the movie.

The New Mutants, created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod originally appeared in the 1982 Graphic Novel #4 which spawned their own comic book series in 1983.

The New Mutants was a team of teenage mutants from the Xavier Institute represented a diverse ethnicity of characters from Brazilian Sunspot, Cheyenne Indian - Mirage, Vietnamese - Karma, as well as a Kentuckian - Cannonball and Scotsmen - Wolfsbane.

The New Mutants were opposed by a rival group of teenage mutants known as the Hellions, a younger generation of the Hell Fire Club.

The New Mutants ran from 1983 to 1991, were relaunched in 2003 for 13 comic book series before being merged into New X-Men: Academy X  and a third volume in 2009 and ran until December 2012.

Ava DuVernay set to sign on to Direct a Marvel Film

Ava DuVernay, the Oscar nominated director of Selma has been linked to the Director's chair for the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Black Panther.

It is important to note that no public announcement has yet been made, rather several social media reports are suggesting the director is very close to signing on to direct a Marvel Studios film.   Reading between the lines on these reports it is easy to read into them Black Panther

The Wrap broke this story late yesterday and it will continue to develop for the next several days I am sure.

The Official Synopsis of Season 3 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been released by ABC Television today.

Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) embarks on a deadly new secret mission to protect the world from new threats in the wake of SHIELD's wars with Hydra and a rogue faction of Inhumans.

Returning "SHIELD" cast members include Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse.

"Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" will keep its 9 p.m. Tuesday night time slot in the fall. "Agent Carter" will again fill in "SHIELD's" midseason hiatus in the same time slot.

Paul Lee President of ABC Television Entertainment added some information on the two potential Spinoffs and Stand Alone Project.

“We absolutely love those characters on S.H.I.E.L.D. We think S.H.I.E.L.D. hit its creative stride this year.” He continued “We thought the right thing now is to leave them on S.H.I.E.L.D., because S.H.I.E.L.D. is so strong on the moment.”

It is pretty clear that he and others in the ABC Television Entertainment office felt that keeping Nick Blood and Adrianne Palicki on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. created a stronger product that two separate shows, at least for now.
I did not believe for a second that the Mockingbird and Hunter was DOA rather that the timing was suspect and I feel vindicated on that regard.

When Lee was questioned on the potential John Ridley project he responded:
“I can’t talk about the John Ridley one, other than to say that he’s working on it.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , , ,

No one was really surprised yesterday when the brass at ABC Television renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a third season; however it was a different story when Agent Carter was renewed for a second season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being renewed for a third season usually guarantees that the show will be renewed for a fourth season, the statistic is like 95% of shows that get a third season get a fourth season as well, and typically a third season also indicates a fifth season.   Again the statistic on broadcast TV is above 75%, cable is a different story.    An example of this phenomenon is when ABC renewed Nashville for a fourth season even though its numbers dropped considerably in season 3.

Agent Carter
Agent Carter getting renewed was a surprise too many as the show greatly underperformed as far as a broadcast TV shows go and continued to lose audience share as the 8 part series progressed.   The show starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter in the early days of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), a precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Marvel Universe.   A show that underperformed and is getting renewed is a decent indicator that change is coming to the format of the show, expect to hear more on the changes in the next week as ABC announces it TV lineup on Tuesday May 12th.

Mockingbird and Agent Hunter
The news for Marvel TV shows was not all good, the proposed spinoff of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starring Adrianna Palicki (Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter) has been dropped for at least this season.   Word has it that while ABC is interested in the giving the duo their own show the brass at ABC was very worried what removing two popular characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would do to that shows audience.

The second Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, which is being helmed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) is still being worked upon but with American Crime being renewed for a second season it muddies the waters on how much work can be done on that show.

Season 1 Cast
With the success of ABC Studios / Netflix Daredevil one must wonder what changes are coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for next season.  Does Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. move into the cursed 10 EST /9 Central time slot and take a darker tone, moving from TV-PG to TV-14 certificate (similar to Movie Ratings) to become more gritty.   Will the show focus on the secondary Super Heroes and their interaction with S.H.I.E.L.D. leading up to Captain America: Civil War will more MCU stars make an appearance on the show?  Will the show get a bigger budget for special effects?   How will the show focus on Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, what about Skye?

On a side note I am disappointed in ABC for not renewing Forever starring Ioan Gruffield (Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise fo the Silver Surfer) as a supernatural Medical Examiner in New York with a unique form of immortality.  For the record I was disappointed when Fox cancelled Amsterdam a show with a similar premise.   With two similar procedure shows (Castle, Elementry) renewed for next season it appears that ABC was concerned that there was no way to raise the ratings for the Warner Brothers Studio production.   Early indicators are suggesting that other outlets maybe interested in the show.

No word on Fox's X-Men TV series, however with the issues on the license for the IP I don't expect to hear anything.

Supposed short list for Spider-Man director's chair

Posted by Jeff Labels:

In a story on Deadline, Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation) are on the very short list for directing the next Spider-Man live action film, with a decision set to be announced by the end of next week.

I have to be brutally honest, at first I thought it was a joke, I mean Drew Goddard was supposedly directing the film already, but I guess with a new notoriously tight wad sherriff in town at SPE, Tom Rothman, maybe...   So I thought about it some more, threw up a little bit in my mouth, and then wondered how bad is the next live action Spider-Man movie going to be.

Let me take a step back, I have long advocated that Andrew Garfield reprise his role as Spider-Man in the Avengers film, and I still do, and than have SPE back fill Miles Morales and Cindy Moon or Mayday Parker into standalone Spider-Man films, I still think that is the way to go there.

With a list of five actors I don't think could act their way out of wet paper bag (which may or may not be there fault by the way as they have not had the greatest material to work with); Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Tom Holland (In The Heart of The Sea), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Killing), were proposed on the short list and then we add this list of directors, I really feel no one at SPE or Marvel has a clue at this point.

How do you feel?

Age of Ultron - Box Office Review

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

My prediction of $217 to $221 was a little off as the movie earned an estimated $188 Million for the weekend.

What happened...

The first question is Audience Fatigue, did it factor in?
The next question is this a trend?

How much did a crowded Sports Weekend factor in, what about the nice weather, bad word of mouth?

Let's start with the busy and unusually "interesting" sports weekend.   There is little doubt that with everything happening on Saturday it hurt the movie at the box office, most guess suggest 5% to 10% lost with NBA game 7's, Kentucky Derby, PPV Boxing and high viewership of NHL games.   That change is between $6 and $12 Million in lost revenue.

Good Weather over the weekend, it should be noted the Original was released on a weekend of bad weather, also hurt attendance.  For some it was a deciding factor in attending, a spot of rain across the US probably would have saw 5% increase in the box office across America.

Here is my answer:

Sony 4K 55" TV
The NFL and MLB are struggling to get fans to come to the games, one of the most cited reasons for peoples reluctance to go, new HD TVs.   That's what I have in my TV viewing room (Home Theater).  It clearly impacts the number of films I go see in the theater, I can think of two recent films I decided to wait until I rented the Blu-Ray, it also impacts the number times I see films in the theater, so instead of seeing Avengers: Age of Ultron four times in the theater, the same number as Marvel's The Avengers I probably will see Age of Ultron twice.   Considering I take two and sometimes four people with me, that's $40 to $80 in lost revenue.

As for the other two a key factor is to watch the numbers for the next two weeks, Avengers earned $400 M in the first two weeks.   If the casual viewers was concerned about crowds at the theaters and decided to stay away for the Weekend the Age of Ultron numbers will match Avengers.   If Age of Ultron isn't in that $370 M range by Friday May 15th, than there will be reason for concern.

Fantastic Four 2 - Getting a new Director

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

If Josh Trank wasn't having a bad enough weekend, after getting fired from Directing the Star Wars Anthology Film on Friday, 20th Century Fox has removed him from directing the sequel to this year's Fantastic Four film, due in 2017.

Now officially he was only "attached" to the director's chair, legalese, so he wasn't necessarily fired, but its clear he will not be directing the sequel, if it happens at all.

Josh Trank Fired!

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

The Hollywood Reporter posts a story suggesting the Josh Trank was indeed fired by Lucas Films.   Josh Trank was set to direct the second Anthology Film, insiders suggest his behavior well directing Fantastic Four were a major issue.

From the Hollywood Reporter Story

Indeed, producers on Fantastic Four, set for release July 30, are said to have faced great challenges pulling the film together given behavior described by one insider as “erratic” and at times “very isolated.” Trank did not offer clear direction, this person adds, saying, "If you've got someone who can't answer questions or who isn't sure or is in hiding, that's not good."

At multiple points during filming of the Fantastic Four rumors of Josh Trank's demise have littered the internet, 20th Century Fox has attempted to suggest they were unfounded rumors, unfortunately Josh Trank leaving the Star Wars Film is like adding Napalm to a Fire in that regard.

Review (of sorts) Avengers: Age of Ultron

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

I never thought writing a movie review was going to be this difficult.

I like the film but (that's a very big but) was extremely disappointed as I felt it should have been so much better than it was.   Those are two very different emotions that arise within me from seeing this film.

Two films slammed together, mercilessly trimmed down in length by well over an hour that force feeds the story to the audience.

Exceptional Cinematography, sound, music, score....

So many missed opportunities

2105 Marvel Film Rankings - A look back and prediction

Posted by Jeff Labels:

Avengers: Age of Ultron Concept Art courtesy of Marvel Studios
When I did my first ratings, eons ago, it was simply based upon my viewpoint.  The first ratings generated a fairly large amount of discussions in my small group and lead to looking at three criteria for my second annual review.  With each passing year I added more criteria and used more sources to create averages for audience and critic.   This year I used 22 different criteria and I thought I had nailed down exactly what I wanted to do; next years will have 33 so I let you guess how nailed down this years was.

More criteria does not ultimately change many movies placement, rather in most cases it solidifies
their position.  This year 18 movies changed positions; 15 of the 18 changed one or two positions up or down, and only 3 movies made larger jumps.
The biggest mover this year was 1998's Blade starring Wesley Snipes helped by the more detailed look at the financials moved up 5 spots.   The Wolverine  dropped 4 spots, which is kind of a head scratcher as it merely the number of critic ratings increased and its position there dropped.

I am not shocked that X-Men continues to hold the top spot, its low budget and fairly decent box office give it solid financial numbers, it did will with critics, audience and myself.

It is however a battle between the X-Men and The Avengers, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is financially a better box office draw, but audience (including passion) and critics have preferred the X-Men universe.   Even looking at the statistics on my little blog hold that to be true, my posts about the X-Men generally have twice the number of hits and twice the number of +1 on google.

As much as I am still amazed by another statistic I shouldn't be shocked, my writings on the so called bombs (i.e. X-Men: Last Stand, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fantastic Four (2005)) also drive my hits on the blog.   It may be I track like minded people together or simple my viewers are matched in the broader sense by a fairly large audience.   Well many people still take Brett Ratner's name in vain audiences do not appear to hate the movie he directed, X-Men: Last Stand, in the way many people believe.

Next Year's ratings will have four new movies added Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Fantastic Four (2015) and Deadpool before the release of Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse in may 2016.   I have my suspicions on where those four movies will end up on the list but the placement of three of the four is pure speculation at this point.

2015 Marvel Film Rankings - X-Men - Number 1

Two mutants come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

What the critics said: Faithful to the comics and filled with action, X-Men brings a crowded slate of classic Marvel characters to the screen with a talented ensemble cast and surprisingly sharp narrative focus.

What I said: A very sharp film that had me hooked from the first trailer.

Many people are shocked that again X-Men stands on top of the movie rankings, but I am not own of those.   It is important to remember that the formula doesn't just look at 4 items and determines an average but 22 items with a few giving varying weights.  This year I changed how my formula worked to lessen audience passion and X-Men still comes out on top, primarily because how passionate its supporters are in comparison to the other Marvel Films.  You would need to remove passion as any kind of multiplier in the formula to drop this movie down.  In simple terms if you like this film, you really like this film.
Another point that I want to bring up about X-Men is how well this movie has stood the test of time.  I would add it isn't just X-Men but a goodly number of films from 2000 look better today than say films of 1999 or 2001, there must have been something in the water that year.

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

What the critics said: With a script that never forgets its heroes' humanity and no shortage of superpowered set pieces, The Avengers lives up to its hype -- and raises the bar for Marvel at the movies.

What I said: Hulk Smash, Smash Records

If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on the eve of the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, you are probably questioning my rankings for not having this on top.   Personally I believe this is, so far, the best film, and if you remove my personal ranking of the film as number 1 it drops to 4th, yes FOURTH on the list.  The Avengers smashed multiple box office records, it is one of the largest selling DVD/Blu-Rays in history, and so on and so forth.   Here is the deal, it is not the Audience most liked film (Guardians of the Galaxy is), it not the critics most liked film (Spider-Man 2 is) and those two factors kept it from the top spot.

The X-Men band together to find a mutant assassin who has made an attempt on the President's life, while the Mutant Academy is attacked by military forces.

What the critics said: Tightly scripted, solidly acted, and impressively ambitious, X2: X-Men United is bigger and better than its predecessor -- and a benchmark for comic sequels in general.

What I said: I should really like this movie more.

This is a movie you really wonder how it gets such high ratings across the board and is able to maintain its place in the rankings.   I think that is a credit to Bryan Singer direction of this film.  You are not inundated with special effects, you have a solid story line and the audience becomes invested in the characters on the screen.   It doesn't hurt that this film has a lowly $110 Million Dollar budget so the use of every dollar mattered.

The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

What the critics said: X-Men: Days of Future Past combines the best elements of the series to produce a satisfyingly fast-paced outing that ranks among the franchise's finest installments.

What I said: Bryan Singer return to the X-Men Universe is thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a film that domestically did not produce at the box office they way many of would have like to seen it do, not that predictions were that far off, we just hoped we were wrong in the correct direction.   From the financial aspects had this film done 15% better in the Box Office it would of had the chance to be the top movie on our list.
People that like this movie, really like this movie, it has the second highest grade in that regard, critics thoroughly enjoyed this film, only Iron Man and Spider-Man 2 were rated higher.
My biggest problem with the Movie are a couple of story line issues that are supposedly addressed in the Rogue Edition being released later this year.

2014 29/32 - Stayed the Same

Peter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius.

What the critics said: Boasting an entertaining villain and deeper emotional focus, this is a nimble sequel that improves upon the original.

What I said: A better movie than the first one, but I do not understand the critical acclaim of this film.

Spider-Man 2 was the first movie with a super-hero sized budget and the quality of the film in comparison to the original Spider-Man film released just two years before.  However in adding 75% additional money to the budget the film made slightly less money than the original and it financial hurt because of it.  Making less money also set the stage for issues in the third film in Sam Raimi's trilogy.
In the eyes of the audience this film has not aged well, its rating with Audiences has slipped a little each year, not enough to drop its place, for the time being, but continued slippage will result in this film dropping in the rankings in the years to come.

After being held captive in an Afghan cave, an industrialist creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight against evil. This leads him to conflict within his own company

What the critics said: Director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey make this smart, high impact superhero movie one that even non-comics fans can enjoy.

What I said: Good Film, but I am still not a Tony Stark Fan

Call it my personal bias, but I am not a big fan of Tony Stark and it shows in my rankings, but not necessarily in it overall position in these rankings.  I would have had to rank this film 8 places higher to have it climb to number 5 and 13 (top spot) to get to number 4, but that's as high as this movie could go.
