ABC Announces Inhumans TV Series

Blackbolt - Image Curtesy of Marvel Entertainment
According to Deadline TV ABC has picked up Marvel's Inhumans TV Series for the Fall of 2017. In an interesting twist, the premier will be Theatrically released in Imax two before it airs on ABC.

The show is not a direct spin off of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and will be a part of the MCU.

What's going on on TV

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , , ,

SuperGirl is moving to the CW, Agent Carter has been cancelled, Marvel's Most Wanted didn't get picked up, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was picked up early as the CW renews Arrow, Flash and DC Legends of Tomorrow.

CBS
The audience for CBS skews older than any other TV station is America.   The average age of the typical viewer is a tad under 60.   CBS green light Supergirl last year in hopes of drawing a younger audience.   In a compromise Supergirl was actually a crime procedural show with a Comic Book character lead.   You know what they say about compromises?
SuperGirl actually was the most watched new Drama on TV; however its viewership numbers never came close to matching the existing dramas on CBS.   While the Audience skewed younger for SuperGirl, the older audience turned off their TVs.
CBS renewed SuperGirl however it moved the show to its sister station the CW.   The expectations is the SuperGirl will continue to draw similar audience numbers and free up a valuable time slot on CBS for a show that more matches the demographics of its audience.

CW
Arrow, and the Flash were renewed fairly early this season leaving the question of whether or not DC Legends of Tomorrow would be renewed.     It was renewed as well about a week or two ago.   With SuperGirl transitioning from CBS to CW there are four DC Comic products on CW this coming season, too many, too early to tell.

NBC
With Heroes Reborn cancelled and little else that qualifies as Sci-Fi/Comic Book/ Fantasy on the channel not much to discuss.   At some point an in depth look at SyFy Channel's shows may be do, but this is not that time.

ABC
In a minor shock ABC cancelled Agent Carter and decided against picking up Marvel's Most Wanted, while renewing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fairly early.
Agent Carter had low ratings which normally is an easy indicator on the forthcoming cancellation of TV Show; however the show had a female lead (Haley Atwell) which is unusual in its own right, but also had a female show runners (Tara Butters) which is so unusual these days that it is one of a small handful of shows that have both.   ABC has been attempting to promote itself is very diverse and suddenly the show that qualifies as being diverse is on the cutting block.   It was obviously not enough to change the shows fate.
The rumors over the past week indicated that Marvel's Most Wanted was not going to be picked up.   Initially I was caught off guard as this was a show that ABC had pushed for.  The show starring Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood (reprising their roles form Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.) had the two ex-spies/agents working against another global conspiracy with a slightly darker point of view that Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. It will be interesting to hear what happened and why a promising project failed since the pilot was green lighted.

ABC still has thee additional Marvel shows in development but little is known for sure on these three projects.

On Freeform (formerly ABC Family) Cloak & Dagger is in production for a January debut.

Even though Agent Carter was cancelled by ABC yesterday it is very likely that a third (and potentially more) will be filmed and aired on a streaming service.    Netflix is rumored to have approached ABC and Marvel Studios as far back as January on taking over the show.    Season 1 of Agent Carter airs on Amazon Prime under an exclusive agreement between Amazon and Marvel.    Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and three additional Marvel TV shows air on Netflix.

It is assumed that Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood will be returning to Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. as both were highly like by the viewers.

Marvel Studios
There three additional projects in production.  Hellfire Club and Legion are X-Men universe projects that will air on Fox and FX in the 2017 time frame.    Empire of the Dead is a limited edition comic being developed into a TV series by AMC.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3

Some Information on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the potential spinoffs was released today as ABC announced its TV lineup for next season.

The Official Synopsis of Season 3 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been released by ABC Television today.

Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) embarks on a deadly new secret mission to protect the world from new threats in the wake of SHIELD's wars with Hydra and a rogue faction of Inhumans.

Returning "SHIELD" cast members include Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse.

"Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" will keep its 9 p.m. Tuesday night time slot in the fall. "Agent Carter" will again fill in "SHIELD's" midseason hiatus in the same time slot.

Paul Lee President of ABC Television Entertainment added some information on the two potential Spinoffs and Stand Alone Project.

“We absolutely love those characters on S.H.I.E.L.D. We think S.H.I.E.L.D. hit its creative stride this year.” He continued “We thought the right thing now is to leave them on S.H.I.E.L.D., because S.H.I.E.L.D. is so strong on the moment.”

It is pretty clear that he and others in the ABC Television Entertainment office felt that keeping Nick Blood and Adrianne Palicki on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. created a stronger product that two separate shows, at least for now.
I did not believe for a second that the Mockingbird and Hunter was DOA rather that the timing was suspect and I feel vindicated on that regard.

When Lee was questioned on the potential John Ridley project he responded:
“I can’t talk about the John Ridley one, other than to say that he’s working on it.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , , ,

No one was really surprised yesterday when the brass at ABC Television renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a third season; however it was a different story when Agent Carter was renewed for a second season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being renewed for a third season usually guarantees that the show will be renewed for a fourth season, the statistic is like 95% of shows that get a third season get a fourth season as well, and typically a third season also indicates a fifth season.   Again the statistic on broadcast TV is above 75%, cable is a different story.    An example of this phenomenon is when ABC renewed Nashville for a fourth season even though its numbers dropped considerably in season 3.

Agent Carter
Agent Carter getting renewed was a surprise too many as the show greatly underperformed as far as a broadcast TV shows go and continued to lose audience share as the 8 part series progressed.   The show starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter in the early days of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), a precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Marvel Universe.   A show that underperformed and is getting renewed is a decent indicator that change is coming to the format of the show, expect to hear more on the changes in the next week as ABC announces it TV lineup on Tuesday May 12th.

Mockingbird and Agent Hunter
The news for Marvel TV shows was not all good, the proposed spinoff of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starring Adrianna Palicki (Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter) has been dropped for at least this season.   Word has it that while ABC is interested in the giving the duo their own show the brass at ABC was very worried what removing two popular characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would do to that shows audience.

The second Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, which is being helmed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) is still being worked upon but with American Crime being renewed for a second season it muddies the waters on how much work can be done on that show.

Season 1 Cast
With the success of ABC Studios / Netflix Daredevil one must wonder what changes are coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for next season.  Does Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. move into the cursed 10 EST /9 Central time slot and take a darker tone, moving from TV-PG to TV-14 certificate (similar to Movie Ratings) to become more gritty.   Will the show focus on the secondary Super Heroes and their interaction with S.H.I.E.L.D. leading up to Captain America: Civil War will more MCU stars make an appearance on the show?  Will the show get a bigger budget for special effects?   How will the show focus on Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, what about Skye?

On a side note I am disappointed in ABC for not renewing Forever starring Ioan Gruffield (Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise fo the Silver Surfer) as a supernatural Medical Examiner in New York with a unique form of immortality.  For the record I was disappointed when Fox cancelled Amsterdam a show with a similar premise.   With two similar procedure shows (Castle, Elementry) renewed for next season it appears that ABC was concerned that there was no way to raise the ratings for the Warner Brothers Studio production.   Early indicators are suggesting that other outlets maybe interested in the show.

No word on Fox's X-Men TV series, however with the issues on the license for the IP I don't expect to hear anything.

John Ridley - Tapped to reinvent a Marvel Superhero for the Small Screen

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

John Ridley at the 2014 Oscars
Novelist and Oscar Winning Writer, John Ridley has been tapped by Marvel to help reinvent a superhero for a potential ABC series.

John Ridley won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with his script for 12 Years a Slave and is working with ABC on the Drama Series American Crime.

The rumor mill is working overdrive as Marvel has announced that John Ridley is working on reinventing, their word, a Superhero for the small screen however no additional details have been announced thus far.

This is not the TV show in development for ABC that has links to the marvel Cinematic Universe, about two weeks ago new broke that Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) have been handed the assignment to create the spin-off of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel has used an interesting choice of words to describe the project "reinventing an existing superhero" and his made me think about how to read this.    In drawing up a list of potential superheroes that could be reinvented I had to cross many off the list.   Miles Morales / Spider-Man wouldn't need reinventing but could be an interesting show.   The Punisher is too dark for broadcast TV.  Ghost Rider, well Marvel doesn't currently control his rights.  Cloak and Dagger has been rumored for several years.  The return of the Incredible Hulk.

The one Marvel hero that really sticks out for me, Blade.   In 1998 Blade sprang onto the big-screen and the success of Wesley Snipes starring as the Day Walker (a vampire who could stand sunlight) lead to two sequels and a short lived TV Series.

Cobie Smulders and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

During her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel live Cobie Smulders confirmed that she will be appearing on an episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the near future as (former) Agent Maria Hill.

Rumor - ABC TV preping Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin off

Clark Greg as Phil Coulson carving on the wall.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Marvel TV Studios are preparing a spinoff of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Rumors suggest that executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0) have been handed the assignment to create the spin-off.  It is an interesting pairing to say the least.

Well we don't know any details beyond it is in the early stages of development it hasn't stopped the rumor mill from cranking up.   So I will add mine.

Currently we have two S.H.I.E.L.D.s in play, one lead by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the other by Robert Gonzales (Edward James Olmos) that are diametric opposites in nature.  I have complained (whined incessantly) that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  needs to have this dichotomy to be successful almost from day one.   I think this situation is going to continue, with Gonzales' team working on the "ordinary" threats and Coulson's team working the "extra-ordinary" threats in season three.

I am guessing the new team will have Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) partnering with a new character cough Agent Abigale Brand cough investigating extra-terrestrial threats.

MAoS to tie into Avengers: Age of Ultron

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive.

Now EW can exclusively reveal that the ABC series will connect to the highly anticipated Avengers sequel. “You should expect something,” executive producer Jed Whedon says. “The Avengers is the big tent that all the franchises play under. Obviously, we’re included in that.”

I don't think anyone will be shocked by that information.   What is interesting is that instead of reacting to Avengers: Age of Ultron it appears that MAoS will be providing a prelude to.

Review Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Things We Bury

Posted by Jeff Labels:

Back by special request.  If you are looking for a proper review of the episode here, here and here

Now that we all know I am skipping the in depth review to discuss my opinion on the show.

I am a fan of the TV Show Lost Girl which air on SyFy (wow I had to go back and change SciFi to SyFy).   One of the most important episodes of the first season was titled Fae Dae which is episode 9, by the way.  Fae Dae is hardly a fan favorite, rather the opposite as its one of the lowest rated episodes by fans on a variety of social media sites.   As a fan its one of the episodes you only watch once and skip later in life when watching the show.   Every Sci-Fi/Fantasy show has one like this, and in some cases every season.   What Fae Dae did for Lost Girl was it explained to the audience much of the backstory and rules for the show to the audience.  It is an important episode because from now on they shows writers don't have to explain every thing to the audience.
With The Things We Bury a large amount of backstory and rules the writers are following for at least this season, so it is important in that regard.   The rest of what is going on is not so important.  It's not an episode I suspect people will plop into the Blu-Ray player anytime after its released and skipped by many people as they watch the second season.   Just watching it once gives the audience the information they need to follow along.

Unlike many episodes (of any Whedon show) there was too much going on and a lot of characters failed to get the necessary screen time to move their individual story lines forward.  In this case was Melinda May's really necessary, how about Mac?  It isn't that I don't like their characters but was the couple of lines they had really more helpful then say expanding some of the other story arcs going on?

Speaking of Mac, this wondering whether Coulson is okay routine has to stop.   Its getting long and its only started last episode.

I dislike how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show runners kill off too many characters that could be very useful down the road.   Last year they killed off Victoria Hand, this year its Christian Ward.   Don't get me wrong I realize these aren't leading characters but rather supporting characters that could really be VERY useful later on.    Could you just imagine for example a second S.H.E.I.L.D. like organization fighting for what goes on with a different agenda, you know called H.A.M.M.E.R.  I feel the same way about Christian Ward, he was a character that could provide a lot of conflict for the show moving forward.

Has Kyle MacLachlan really been impressive in his supporting role or what.   For a actor in a supporting guest role Kyle has been fantastic, charming and spooky and what other adjective you want to use.   To use a sports metaphor he sure has earned more playing time.

Unless we are on the biggest red herring hunt of all time, the Kree and Inhumans story line is still humming along a Warp Speed and nothing has been put in place to dissuade us of that fact.

Here is the promo for the next episode.

A couple of thoughts
I think it would be awesome to have the Guardians of the Galaxy team in the Fall Series finale.  I mean if you are introducing Inhumans in MAOS what a way to do it.   Chris Pratt agrees by the way.

It is my understand that Star Wars: The Force Awakens first teaser trailer will air during the Fall Series Finale.

Review - Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

In response to a special request I received about my opinion of the latest episode of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Writing on the Wall S2E7.

Short Version: If you have watched every episode of Season 1 and the first six episodes of Season 2 you would find this episode reWARDing in many ways.   If you haven't caught every episode or weren't paying close attention to all the details than this episode just didn't fit together.   This episode was assembled more along the lines of a Mystery (whodunit) than the typical action oriented episodes of the previous five weeks.

Long Version:
Skye told Director Coulson "It's All Connected" and I couldn't agree more.   There have been soo many Easter Eggs and hints about the show and where it is going that is intriguingly interesting if you are a puzzler and want to assemble the puzzle.   Speculation on what you don't know and how it fits into the over all puzzle.   It's not just this week episode but in almost every episode there are multiple references to a larger Marvel Universe.   I'm still trying to understand Agent 33's connection to MCU as she is the individual in the comic universe who recruits Hercules in a similar fashion as Coulson recruited Thor in the MCU.

In discussions after Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released show runners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon explained how they were presented with a copy of the movie script and told to plan changes to the series around it.   At that point either May or Ward had to become Hydra mole and due to some logistics it became Ward. (1)
While there were many complaints about Ward and whether Brett Dalton was airmailing in performances it clearly in hind sight was all building to make him a great antagonist to the team.   We can only hope he isn't over used as the story progresses.
IMHO this progressing to the point where Grant Ward will be a Mercenary for Hire, neither supporting Hydra in its entirety or completely an enemy of the rebuilt S.H.E.I.L.D.     Several bloggers have suggested that Grant Ward could a representation of the "Swordsman" and a couple have suggested he could be the next Punisher.  As far fetched as that idea seems its grown on me.

Another thing this episode attempted to do was tie up a great number of personal character story arcs but it wasn't just about ending but starting some new potential issues going forward.
IMHO many of the story lines that they were ending, went on one episode too long.  I have said this about the show before but you have 7 episodes of story told in 8 episodes, same deal last year.
Clearly this episode ends the prequel stage to the fall series and next episode starts the 5 episode run up to the fall season finale.

Could we have are first connection to the Punisher?   When Director Coulson asks Skye about the images from the murder scene She replies "One of my sources, Micro, he is kind of a crime scene junkie."   Is Micro short for Microchip, an Tech savvy ally of Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, who happens to be a crime scene junkie in the comics.   It's an Easter egg that bears watching.

Spoilers Below - You have been warned.

This is a great shot from the end of the Episode.

It shows the small ragtag bunch Director Coulson is leading:
Director Coulson is separate from the team, he is no longer the father figure of season one, but the man in charge, the man who has to make difficult choices.
Agent Simmons is fascinated by the map, in Making Friends and Influencing People she said it was the Science that mattered not the team.   She is also not standing by Agent Fitz.
Agent Morse is staring at Director Coulson, it really looks like she is questioning his authority to lead S.H.I.E.L.D.
Hunter has the look of what the heck did I get myself into, is this worth what I am getting paid.
Skye wants to know more from Coulson, like maybe why isn't she going crazy?
Agent Fitz is the background obscured and covered in Shadow
Agent Tripplet is looking to something off screen and away from everyone else.
Mac is clearly intrigued with the map.

So much thought went into this one five second shot it mind numbing.

Another interesting tidbit we learned this week Adrianne Palicki who plays agent Bobbi Morse revealed that she has a agreement to appear in one of the Phase 3 Movies.  I should also note the Frank Grillo who plays Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, has a contract for up to 5 Movies.
Originally Adrianne Palicki character Mockingbird was supposed to appear in a handful of episodes but with such fan support its believed she will be elevated to regular (or as close as you can get) for the remainder of the Season.
Adrianne Palicki is on record suggesting (2) that Jeremy Renner who plays Clint Barton / Hawkeye may be appearing in a later episode of MAoS if his work schedule allows it.   Jeremy Renner who is currently working on Mission Impossible 5 would be tentatively available before filming of the Bourne Betrayal begins which would be during the filming of the spring MAoS series, just saying.

Could we be reaching the point where MAoS has multiple teams in the field?

We also learned that Brett Dalton (Grant Ward) next week ends his run a regular cast member to the show.   He technically didn't appear in S2E2 but he was still a credited star of that episode.

Next week episode list of guest stars include Hayley Atwell (Agent Peggy Carter), Lou Ferrigno Jr. (Agent Hauer), Reed Diamond (Daniel Whitehall) and Kyle MacLachlan (Skye's Father).
The new interesting character on the list is Agent Hauer, could this be Joesph Hauer the British Super Soldier (A mutant who is a cross between Wolverine and Captain America) who's primary ally in the comics is Commander Lance Hunter.

We are expected to learn more about Skye's Father, could Skye's Father be Gordon Nobili, an Inhuman with Superhuman Strength (and the ability to talk to his dead ancestors) who goes on to lead the Nobili crime family in the comics and is later consumed with hatred of the Punisher who's actions he believes lead to the death of his sons?   I should note that in the comics Gordon Nobili is transformed from a relativily normal looking elder gentleman to purple rock like dude.

There are rumors that a number of C and B list characters will be making an appearance in MAoS especially during the Spring Series of 10 Episodes.   These include Taylor Kitcsh as Nova, Fran Kranz as Speedball and a list of other potential members of the New Warriors whose failed attempt to capture Nitro on a reality TV show created the crisis that leads to Marvel Civil War.   If true that indicates MAoS is no longer just reacting to MCU but helping setup the minor details of a bigger universe before hand.

Inhumans #8 on sale Wednesday November 19th

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

Okay, so what does a comic book being put on sale have to do with a log about Movies and TV, besides the obvious link that this blog is generally about Superhero (specifically Marvel Superheroes)?

Next week Inhumans #8 goes on sale on Wednesday November 19th, Marvel has doubled the number of comics they are shipping to all customers of that issue, at no cost.   So if your small comic book store gets 5 copies normally they are going to get 10 for the price of five.

That's odd, isn't it.

Hayley Atwell is guest starring on Tuesday's airing of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, in addition we had a glimmering image of Attilan, maybe, also know as the great refuge that was hidden for thousands of years in the Himalayan Mountains, near where Skye was found as an infant, according to her backstory.

There are a couple of other possibilities, Atlantis and Asgard most notable, but the odds are it is most likely Attilan.

Throughout the first two seasons we have had numerous hints that Skye is Inhuman, for example she is an 084 (SHIELD code for unknown), she did not go crazy with blood injection from the Kree, um she even knew it was Kree by the way, she figured out it was a map, and so on and so forth.

Generally speaking us bloggers have decided the Skye is a member of the Inhumans species (A genetic variation on Cro-magnon created by the Kree) who dwelt in the Great Refuge.  Could the announcement be coming on Tuesday?

Marvel Making Anouncements during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

Marvel Studios has posted in LA for fans to watch for a special event in L.A. area on Tuesday during the airing of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.   Members of the press have already been invited to the event.

The invitation to the press suggests that Marvel will be making at least one if not more than one announcement during the event.   It simply could be to officially announce the Robert Downey Jr. is joining the cast of Captain America: Fallen Son or announcing they have selected an actor to play Doctor Strange or even the entirety of phase three movie line up.

New Avengers: Age of Ultron footage to premiere during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

The original plan was for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to have the exclusive premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer during this weeks episode.   Hydra ruined the plans of Mouse and Men leaking the trailer, incredibly poor quality trailer I might add, so Marvel realizing to get ahead of the leak released the official trailer.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. just cannot seem to catch a break.

The official trailer had 35 million views in the first 24 hours and nearly 50 million views in 48 hours.   Shattering every record about teaser trailer views online.

Marvel announced last night new footage will be aired during Tuesday evening's episode of  Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in place of the teaser trailer.
Rumor suggest that Marvel Studios was prepared for such a contingency already.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - 5 episodes into season 2

Posted by Jeff Labels:

I debated on whether or not to review Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or not during the season, and due to the course of the story telling I decided to not individually review each episode.  Rather I would chime in and occasionally say something witty (it does happen once a decade or so you know).

My biggest complaint about MAoS, as with every other Josh Whedon TV show, is the story telling is too slow and then 15 episodes in the show hits breakneck speed as it tries to catch up.   Its like following a car driving 45 MPH on the interstate and once you see you destination the car speeds up from 45  to 75 MPH, it may be legal but damn does it feel slow.
Season 2 of MAoS follow that similar pattern.   The first four episodes were expanded to give us five episodes of the show on TV.  Its hard to keep excited about a show, no matter how witty, how well written, if you feel 5 to 10 minutes of every episode is simple filler.
Over the past two weeks [episodes 2.4 and 2.5] the storyline had Agents Fitz [Elizabeth Henstridge] as a mole working at Hydra facility.   I really have no problem with this storyline taking place over two episodes, as a matter of fact I could of handled it being spread out over more episodes.  In the way the storyline was constructed it however felt too long.    There was too much telling the audience with dialogue rather than showing us with scenes; if that made sense.      If you take the first half Fitz as a mole in the episode 2.4 and spread that out through 2.2 and 2.3 you get a better story telling from TV Show perspective.
I should acknowledge why it done this way, syndication, you want each episode individually maintained you don't want people to have to watch six episodes so they can understand episode seven.   I maintain however that in this case it works much much better.

Director Phillip Coulson
My next problem with the first 5 episodes in season 2 is Marvel Studios definitely underusing almost everyone on the show, everyone except Coulson.   I am not sure why Season 2 is so Coulson centered but it is starting to get annoying.   Hey I think Clark Gregg is an good actor and Phil Coulson is great character, but we as an audience are getting way too much of one character.
From the outside perspective it is easy to understand why we are getting less of many characters, Simmons, Fitz, May and even to some extent Skye, but it makes for boring TV.    We are supposed to appreciate/understand Simmons sacrifice and he sleeps into the background like a character who is one day going to miraculously recover and return to his place on the show, doesn't work like that.   Having Fitz as a figment of Simmons imagination for the first three episodes.  May arguing about what steps need to happen if Coulson start acting like Garret.  The show is not about a team of Agents at the moment.
Agent Isabelle Hartly
Its not just the regular cast, but guest stars like Lucy Lawless, Agent Isabelle "Izzy" Hartly,  was wasted in her one episode visit to the show.   The problem with killing off Izzy in one episode is we as an audience never appreciated her role in the show and understand the sacrifice she made.
Killing off Victoria Hand last season still bothers me.

The next problem is a nitpicky one, but even my 10 year old son gripes about it, you have 50 great CGI shots in a single show, but you always end up with that one bad one that breaks the immersion of the audience.   In episode 2.5 it was he Quinnjet flying away after rescuing Mockingbird and Fitz, the Shot didn't work, it lasted 5 seconds, why include it?

Even though I feel the show is moving along to slowly the show has some solid writing and story arcs moving along.   I don't feel like the audience is going to say that was some extremely hokie dialogue or you don't believe the characters would do something they did.

Even though I griped in the last section there is one bad CGI scene in every episode the other 49 or so CGI scenes look good.   I understand that Marvel Studios is spending 1.5 Million dollars an episode on CGI and it shows for the most part.   That's the kind of budget a show like The Flash or Arrow only wishes they have for 5 episodes yet alone a single episode.   Most of the CGI looks really good and as an audience you have little to now problem accepting it as "real".

Mockingbird in Tactical Suit
One of my complaints during the first season was you have a superhero show without superheroes and just as much without super-villains.    Yes Michael Petersen becomes Deathlok, and we have seen Blizzard before he is Blizzard and ...  But the problem remains this show takes place in a world filed with half the superheroes in the Marvel Universe and maybe a quarter of the super-villains we ended up with multiple shows that had neither; 0-8-4 anyone?
I had hope that Agent May, aka the Cavalry, would become more of a superhero during season 1, but alas my hopes were umm, disappointed to say the least.
I am hopeful that Season 2 Episode 5 changed all that with the introduction of Agent Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird(1). Bobbi Morse is Espionage Expert as opposed to Assassin that Natasha Romanoff [AKA Black Widow] is.  In the Comic Book storyline she marries Clint Barton [Hawkeye].  What's interesting to me is Mockingbird is mainstream Marvel Character being introduced on MAoS.   The producer of the show has indicated she will be sticking around a while.
In addition in next week's episode we are potentially introduced to three mainstream or near mainstream characters from the Marvel Universe, in She-Hulk, the original Whiplash, and Gorgon.
The further inclusion of these characters is a good thing.

A number of bloggers have suggested the show will be morphing over the next 5 to 7 episodes to be more of a Superhero/Villain oriented show.  With Coulson struggling to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. as director with Agent May as his second in command.   The story will be less about one team and more about multiple teams.  I am not sure that those changes work, however file it under we shall see.

IMHO the show is currently "okay" but could be a lot better, and the potential is there to make the changes to do just that.   The question is how attached the show producers are to its current format, I guess time will tell.

What about the poor ratings?

First the current rating metrics are no longer valid, Nielsen Overnight ratings mean nothing to scripted shows.   Nielsen +7 ratings, the number of people who watched the show in the first 7 days since it release is all that matters.    As an example 5.98 Million viewers watched the Season 2 premiere, another 4.96 Million unique viewers turned into TiVO, ABC on Demand, or other similar system to catch the show.     If the metrics hold up between 9 and 10 million viewers a week will tune in to the show at some point.   ABC is not going to complain about those metrics.
MAoS is the most syndicated show internationally on TV at the moment, airing in 106 countries almost 25% more then the number two show.     The first season had tremendous sales of the first season on BluRay/DVD.   The show earned so much money; upwards of 40% percent of the total revenue generated by ABC TV Studios, that it was mentioned in last quarters Disney Quarterly report of potential generating 1.3 Billion [That's B as Billion Baby] dollars of revenue.   To put that in perspective, MAoS cost about the same to produce as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, factoring in Blu-Ray/DVD sales they earned roughly the same amount of money.
The only concern ABC has is that the show is not generating enough revenue for the non-ABC owned ABC stations.  Like Hubbard Broadcasting in the Twin Cities.

(1) In all fairness Mockingbird was long considered for the first Marvel Cinematic Universe live action TV Show.   Their are rumors of the pilot and script on several web-sites.   The show was to be based in New Orleans following a College Aged Version of Mockingbird and the show was to be Teen Friendly on ABC Family.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Agent Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.

Guest starring are B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie, Adrian Pasdar as General Glenn Talbot, Tim Dekay as Senator Christian Ward, Falk Hentschel as Marcus Scarlotti, Joe Marinelli as Adamo Dioli, Liberte Chan as international reporter, Parisa Fakhri as Senator’s aide, Michael Enright as Julien Beckers, Melanie Cruz as Agent Noelle Walters, Brian Tee as Toshiro Mori, Darrel Cherney as tattoo artist, Brian Van Holt as stranger and Chris Wolfe as news reporter.
Lets cover the basics.

Bobbi Morse is Mockingbird
Senator Christian Ward is Agent's Ward Father

Now onto the not basics

Marcus Scarlotti sounds a lot like Mark Scarlotti, who in the comic book world is a former weapons engineer for Stark Industries who purchases a set of body armor from Justin Hammer and becomes the original Whiplash.   Anton Vanko, Iron Man 2, is actually the third villain in the Marvel Comic Universe to use the name Whiplash.
Agent Noelle Walters, wonder if her middle name is Jennifer as in Jennifer Walters as in She-Hulk.
Toshiro Mori, again sounds like Tomi Shishido who is a Hydra agent who becomes the Gorgon, a evil super ninja who leads the hand.

If true; Whiplash, She-Hulk, Gorgon could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the Small Screen.
