X-Men and the MCU - Commentary

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , ,

Fox's second to the last X-Men film is about to hit theaters and Disney is about to get stuck between a Rock and Hard place with a decision it has to make concerning the X-Men films.

Dark Phoenix was not expected to be very good and thanks to throwing money at the film it became a lot more expensive than it was originally planned.    Many expected the film to end the X-Men universe from Fox with a whimper.

The film is currently sitting at a 25% on rottentomatoes.com, it is not very good. I hear you all saying it.   Read the reviews.   Many reviewers were simply looking for a comic book movie to take out their displeasure with comic book movies on.   They didn't dare attack the MCU and the DCEU and Hellboy aren't big enough targets.  The reviewers who actually like comic books or comic book films actually liked or at least didn't dislike the film.  Based upon Metacritic.com the average score for those that liked the film, the top 55% was ~65 out of 100.   The bottom 44% is ~28 out of 100.  That's a wide gulf of difference of opinion.    In looking at the critic scores not put into metacritic yet I think there is a good possibility the gulf grows.

Dark Phoenix is not a good movie, but it isn't a bad movie and nowhere near as bad as it rottentomatoes.com score either.   The real score will be better measured by cinemascore or other similar metric.  Do the people that see the movie like the movie?    Does Dark Phoenix get positive word of mouth?

This is where Disney and Marvel Studios run into their conundrum.    Dark Phoenix was expected to lose money, lots of it.  Giving Disney the easy answer in ending the X-Men Universe.    Problem is it might end up making money and end up in the black.   As one analyst suggested it is not improbable that the film makes $50 to $100 Million in profit.

How does it get into the black?
$150 domestic and $450 overseas or $125 domestic and $525 foreign earns $300 in revenues on a $200 Million dollar film (plus marketing).   That's about $50 in the black.

This isn't the first time that the X-Men were on the chopping block.

So what happens if Dark Phoenix ends in the black with a solid cinemascore from fans?

Well it is complicated.

The answer may lie with a few statements made by past directors of the X-Men franchise not named Bryan Singer.   Simon Kinberg recently spoke about how professional and organized Marvel Studios are in comparison to 20th Century Fox.    How things like schedules and budgets and special effects and oversight are better with Marvel Studios.  Gavin Hood, Brett Ratner, and Matthew Vaughn have been critical to the lack of support and changes made, often without their knowledge, by 20th Century Fox.   James Mangold hasn't openly criticized 20th Century Fox, but he suggested that The Wolverine was held back by some 20th Century Fox issues.

When Disney finally decides to do something with the X-Men they have three very different options to choose from.

1) A Hard reboot and Merge with the Marvel Cinematic Universe
2) A Soft Reboot and a Merge with the Marvel Cinematic Universe
3) A Soft Reboot and a separate X-Men Universe.

Most fans are in favor of option 1.   It is all over the fan pages and forums.   And before I saw Dark Phoenix I was in that spot.

Option 3 has been pitched to Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, but he has publicly stated that Disney will be happy to put X-Men under Marvel Studios.

Option 2 seemed ridiculous two days-ago.   If Marvel Studios will be the production company, than a Hard Reboot, cut from 20th Century Fox X-Men seemed all but assured.

At the moment I think Option 1 is still the most likely solution, but neither Option 2 nor Option 3 should be removed completely from the table, yet.
The bigger the box office the more likely they movie down the list.   If Dark Phoenix post $50 to $100 Million in profit option 2 becomes a stronger choice and if for some reason the movie brings in $200 Million plus in profit (Talking about a $750 world wide take) option 3 comes into play.

Me personally I think option 2 is the good choice, but there is no best choice.

Bob Iger what are you going to do?

Dark Phoenix - Review

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

Dark Phoenix is not a good movie, but it is not a bad movie either.   It is stuck in that nebulous realm of being simply an okay movie.   I would also add that if you are a fan of the X-Men comics, you actually might like the movie.

The script is a big problem for this film.  The best way to think of the script is to look at 8 episode series for The Runaways paired down to 2 hours and shown on a big screen.  It is not a script for a big budget movie, the scope is too small and you are expected to know exactly what happened  in the missing six hours of the film that you don't see.

The script is not true to the source material, changes are made simply for the sake of changes.   As a fan of the X-Men comics I found this frustration difficult to contain while I watched the film.  I am sure the poor guy sitting next to me was exacerbated with me as I sighed and probably asked "Why?" out loud more than once.

The script wastes the talents of multiple actors through out the film.    The film has a triumvirate of actors at the core with Jennifer Lawrence (Raven Darkholm/Mystique), James McAvoy (Charles Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (Erik Lensherr/Magento) that is interlaced with Sophie Turner's character (Jean Grey).     You can easily question why the next six core X-Men are in the film, they are given little to no screen time and beyond one or two moments they are not given a chance to showcase their talents or their mutant powers.

Mystique is presented as a caring and guiding teacher, Charles Xavier is a villain and Magneto is not prepared for what comes.   I was dumb founded.     There are a couple of scenes that are hard to watch.

I still have no idea why Jessica Chastain was in the film, other than someone at 20th Century Fox said there needed to be a main villain, named Vuk.    She is not realistically given anything to do nor do you believe she is a great villain, but she is there to unite the X-Men.

The special effects are hit and miss.   While those involving Jean Grey and a few around other characters are okay, many look like they belong in a 1980's era TV show.   You just want Ryan Reynolds to show up as Deadpool and give a Mystery Science Theater 3000 commentary on more than one scene.

The second act is a complete mess.   Issues with the characters, scripts, poor acting, bad direction, and literally it doesn't seem to properly connect with the first or third act.

Sophie Turner is very good as Jean Grey.  To put it mildly it is disappointing she will most likely not take up the mantle of Jean Grey in the MCU, because she is one bad ass woman you don't want to mess with.

There are a many good lines in the movie.   For a script that is so bad with it's swings and missed it hits the nail on the head solidly a good dozen times.

Hans Zimmer's score is exceptional; with over 200 composer credits this is easily within his top five  and maybe even his best work.     If the movie was slightly better I would say this is Oscar worthy, as it is it still might be.

Jennifer Lawrence on the Future of the X-Men

Posted by Jeff Labels: ,

In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly Jennifer Lawrence was asked about her future in the X-Men universe.

“Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking,” she says, “Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are.”
Jennifer Lawrence spoke originally after X-Men: First Class suggesting that she would never do another X-men film beyond her contract and as recently as last year told MTV "The next one [X-Men: Apocalypse] is my last one."

Her stance has softened in the past year and recently she has suggested she would be open to return if her co-stars also return.

X-Men: Apocalpyse - A Quick Review

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

There is a scene in X-Men: Apocalypse that sums up the movie in a very ironic way.   Scott Sommers / Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Gray (Sophie Turner), Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Jubilation "Jubilee" Lee (Lana Condor) are exiting a movie Theater after watching Return of the Jedi while discussing whether or not third movies in a trilogy can be as good as others.   How Ironic.

Much like Return of the Jedi, fans will like this film, but it will be far from their favorite and many will have a dozen suggestions on how it could have been made better.

There are a number of solid story arcs through out the film and each character has a unique point of view.  Their stories are muffled by the sheer number of characters and constant action in the film.   X-Men: Apocalypse features a strong cast with a good mix of returning actors and new up and coming actors.    As an audience you never become fully attached to many of the characters on the screen.   Even though they have a unique story most story arcs and characters are not on the screen long enough for us to truly care about them as characters.

In X-Men: Evolution (2000), the animated television show, the central story arc of "Age of Apocalypse" spent 4 seasons  and 46 episodes leading up to the showdown with Apocalypse.   The same story arc in this movie is given just under two and half hours, it just doesn't work.   It is too involved of a story.   The first 40 minutes of the film is made up a series of very short scenes that jump from place to place to place to place at break neck speed that only Quicksilver could appreciate.   Those not versed in X-Men lore may find it difficult to keep up and lose interest in the secondary story arcs.

There are six true tent-pole super-hero movies this year; Deadpool, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, Suicide Squad, and Doctor Strange as well as X-Men: Apocalypse.   The other five, if just in the trailers, attempt to separate themselves from the pack by taking chances in creating new and different situations for their super-heroes.   You can argue how successful BvS: DoJ was but the other two so far this year were very successful.  X-Men: Apocalypse doesn't necessarily take chances, it is extremely formulaic, even though it is set in 1980's.   As an audience you kind of know what is coming next because that is what the blueprint says to do.

Marvel Studios (Disney/Buena Vista) has a clear advantage when it comes to VX/CGI.   X-Men: Apocalypse being released so close to Captain America: Civil War highlights the disadvantage most studios are faced with today.   The VX/CGI effects looked dated and incomplete in comparison to Captain America: Civil War.   The film felt more in line with X-Men: X-Men United (2003) than it does with X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).

X-Force - Moving Forward

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , ,

Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg are making the rounds promoting X-Men; Apocalypse which is being released next week, took some time to answer some questions about other films in the X-Men universe.

When asked about the possibility of X-23 replacing Wolverine in future films by Fandango Bryan Singer responded.

"I have discussed that  with the studio, I actually initially pitched the X-Force and the female."
He later added.

"Anytime you throw all these characters together to hit a start date, it can make a lot of money, but it can also be a cluster$%#^. To me, it has to be done with a lot of care. These things can get overwhelming, and if a character doesn’t belong in a movie, don’t use him. If the tone can still maintain itself, I’m all for it. What I’m not for is throwing a bunch of characters together and hoping it works.”

In another interview Simon Kinberg added:

When there are films that want to be raunchier, want to be darker, want to be violent or R-rated, [20th Century Fox will] be open to it.
And not every movie should be. I don't think that the main X-Men movies should be R-rated; I don't think they're R-rated stories. But if we were to make an X-Force movie, that probably should be R-rated. And what we're doing with the Wolverine movie... that wasn't impacted by Deadpool. We'd made the decision for Wolverine to be R-rated before Deadpool came out. But I think there's even more confidence about having made that decision now that you see that an R-rated Deadpool movie can do better than any X-Men movie's ever done.”

Other sites are adding that an X-Force script has been ordered.

Jeff Wadlow, most known for directing Kick Ass 2 has long been rumored as director and writer of the film.    Stephen Lang for the longest time was rumored as Cable.

Untitled Wolverine Sequel will be R-Rated

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

Speaking with Collider Simon Kinberg confirmed that the forthcoming Wolverine sequel will be r-rated.   He continued to add that the film will be set in the future, have a western feel, but declined to address additional specifics.

Hugh Jackman returns as Logan / Wolverine and is joined by Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X.

Many believe the rumors to indicate that the film will be based upon the Old Man Logan comic book story arc in which the Super Villians Won the "war" and created a dystopian future.

Over the past week several actors have been "announced" to joining the film, including Eric La Salle (ER), Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, and Stephen Merchant.

Additionally the casting call sheet for the film was looking for a body double that many people think is for Laura Kinney / X-23.

The film is set for release on March 3, 2017.

Next X-Men film to be set in the 1990's

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , ,

Talking to comingsoon.net Simon Kinberg revealed the next X-Men film will be set in the 1990's.

In 1991 Marvel revisioned the X-men in to separate comic books, The Uncanny X-Men chronicled the storys of the X-Men lead by Storm while the X-Men [comic book] followed the blue team lead by Cyclops.   The new comics brought in new costumes and new story lines and were some of the most successful comic books in history financially.   The X-Men issue #1 sold an estimated 3 .5 million copies and marvel shipped nearly 8 million copies making I the largest selling single comic book of all time.

There is no indication on whether Simon Kinberg was referring to X-Men: New Mutants or the untitled X-Men 7 film rumored to be in pre-development.

It should be noted that 20th Century Fox has already booked time at the same Montreal Studio that Bryan Singer filmed X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.   Bryan Singer has recently noted he wanted a crack at the Dark Phoenix Saga.

It is believed that most of the reoccurring cast from second trilogy, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult, all signed 3 movie contracts which would be complete with X-Men: Apocalypse.  The cast from the original trilogy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, James Marsden and Rebecca Romijn signed individual contracts for each movie they have appeared in.

Hugh Jackman has indicated that he is retiring after one final outing as Wolverine in the untitled Wolverine Sequel currently filming.

Ryan Reynolds character Deadpool, would be difficult to incorporate into a X-Men film according to Bryan Singer.   One would have to imagine it would be even more difficult set in the 1990's.

Who Should Play X-23?

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , , ,

Courtesy of Marvel Comics
Last week comic book hype broke the story that Laura Kinney, aka X-23, will make her movie debut in the forthcoming Wolverine sequel from 20th Century Fox.

X-23, aka Laura Kinney, is a clone of Logan / James Howlett / Wolverine created by Dr. Sarah Kinney for a top secret program attempting to replicate the work of Weapon X.   As the Y Chromosome is damaged Dr. Kinney duplicates a X pair creating a female version.    X-23 is the first successful attempt at the procedure after 22 failed attempts, hence the name X-23.    Dr. Kinney names the young child Laura.   I'll skip a lot of the details, but X-23 is a killing machine.

Assuming X-23 is indeed in the forthcoming Wolverine Sequel, who should portray the raged filled teenager?

The first question is how old do the producers, how tall and how old.

The casting call suggests someone over 21 and between 4' and 4' 11" tall.    Well that's a tall order.   If only Kate Beckinsale was 10 years younger or....   That's my biggest problem with the part, I can think of half-a-dozen actresses that would be great fit for the part ten years ago, now everyone I can think of has potential problems.

Prior to the release of Deadpool director Tim Miller suggest that Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black fame was cast as X-23 for Deadpool.  Tatiana Maslany would be a popular choice and yes a safe choice for the part.

Hannah John-Kamen portrays the assassin, I mean bounty hunter Dutch on SyFy's Killjoys.     At 26 years old and experienced in working with Sci Fi, even if just in television Hannah has displayed the look and temperament of X-23 as Dutch on Killjoys, at 5ft 5in tall she is about 6 inches too tall for the part.
As a side note she stars opposite Aaron Ashmore, the identical twin brother to Shawn Ashmore who portrays Bobby Drake / Iceman in several X-Men films.

Ksenia Solo is most known for her role as Kensey Malikov on the Canada TV series Lost Girl opposite of Anna Silk.   Current she stars as Piggy Shippen on AMC TURN: Washington Spies.

From her roles on both TV and Cinema Ksenia Solo has shown the ability to capture a variety of different looks and appearances.   At 5ft 4in tall she stands almost half a foot too tall from the casting sheet.   None of her roles have shown the physical side of combat.

Hailee Steinfeld is a fan favorite for any parts in the X-Men universe as her name has been linked to at least three different parts in the past three years from Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse to Vanessa in Deadpool.

Hailee has appeared in numerous movies, tv and music videos; however her role as Petra Arkinian in Ender's Game is what get Sci Fi Fans excited.

She is 5ft 7in tall and only 19 years old so she does not necessarily fit description in the casting call.

Emilia Clarke is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen on HBO's Game of Thrones.   Many of her Game of Thrones co-stars have roles in the X-Men universe, including Sophie Turner as the young Jean Grey and Maise Williams who is signed on to play Rahne Sinclair in the forthcoming X-Men: New Mutants.

At 5ft 2in tall Emilia Clarke is the closest in height to the casting call, I should point out Hugh Jackman is 6ft 2in tall a clear half-a-foot taller than Logan is in the comic books.

So out of those I have listed who would I like to see get the part?   Well I think Brianna Hildebrand
would be the best choice.   Whoops she is already cast as Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the X-Men universe.

From those listed I think Emilia Clarke is the closest to what the producers of X-Men have indicated in their casting call.   With many of her costars are already attached to parts in the X-Men universe clearly gives her a leg up if she is interested in he part.  If I were choosing I'd give a long look at Hannah John-Kamen but her height might be too much for the producers.

Just my thoughts.

New Mutants - An Update

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Collider has provided us with an update to Josh Boone's X-Men movie: New Mutants.

In the update which looked at Josh Boone's instantgram account a series of images suggest the characters in the movie.

Wolfsbane will be played by Maise Williams, most known for playing Arya Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones TV Series.

Anya Taylor-Joy is rumored for the part of Magik, she is best known for playing Cassandra in the TV Series Atlantis and the lead roll of Thomasin in The Witch.

Rumors suggest that either Alexandra Shipp or Halle Berry could play Storm.

Sunspot was previously portrayed by Adan Canto in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Josh Boone Announced that he has turned in a second draft of the script to 20th Century Fox and is now waiting to hear back on what changes they would like to see.   Josh Boone is a busy man in Hollywood as he is currently working on two additional projects, The Stand and Lisey's Story.

The X-Men have a messed up timeline to begin with and there has been no statement that I am aware of where this film fits into anything in the X-Men timeline.  Nor has there been anything official released about a potential release date.
