Emily Carmichael - Director of Captain Marvel

Rumors running around the web this afternoon is suggesting that Emily Carmichael has landed the coveted position as Director of the forthcoming Captain Marvel film.

Emily Carmichael is an indie director known for making shorts rather than feature length films but supposedly a film named Arrow caught Marvel's eye and is the reason for bringing her in for interviews.

Emily Carmichael

A few weeks ago Jeff Sneider from the Wrap had this to say.
There was a rumour about an actress being up for it; an already existing rumour, that’s not new. I’ve definitely heard there’s some truth to that rumour, and that there’s a director with the same first name who has also been eyed. I don’t think that [an announcement] is too far off. If they can make it to Comic Con, they will.
Does that mean Emily Blunt will be Captain Marvel?

Captain Marvel - Carol Danvers
From the official Marvel Twitter Account.

Nicole Perlman is a co-writer of the Guardians of the Galaxy and was originally hired by Marvel Studios to write a treatment (pre-script) for a stand alone Black Widow movie that has not gone anywhere.

Meg LeFauve wrote the screenplay for the forthcoming Pixar Animation release Inside Out.

Speculation - Captain Marvel, Mystique and Spider-Man

Posted by Jeff Labels: , , ,

Today in a little flourish I blogged about three casting stories, Captain Marvel, Mystique and Spider-Man; I received an E-Mail asking what I thought about these three stories.  So here is some speculation on my part.

Gigi Edgley as Captain Marvel, the likelihood of this being true is not very high.   I like Gigi as an actress, I think she has the right personality and attitude to make it work, she looks the part and no one is going to be comparing it to her previous role.   Yet with Katheryn Winnick offering to duel Katee Sackhoff for the role and nearly every other blonde in Hollywood suggested as a potential its hard to see Gigi getting the part.  With all that said it is still odd the Gigi is suddenly making the rounds to increase her name recognition.
As an aside Jim Hensen Studios is in the scripting stage of a Farscape Movie and the leads from the TV show have been turning up more frequently, are they pulling a Ryan Reynolds and attempting to get a film made?

Jennifer Lawrence announced she is hanging up the body paint after X-Men: Apocalypse and leaving Mystique behind.  What about the announced Mystique standalone film, what about the next X-Men film...
Jennifer Lawrence is not the first actor to announce they are leaving an iconic role, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr, Harrison Ford, George Clooney, William Shatner and a whole long list have been there done that.   Yet most actors in Iconic roles re-sign with a big pay raise.
Lets be honest Jennifer Lawrence can now command $10 a film easily, she was paid $250,000 for X-Men: First Class, $500,000 for X-Men: Days of Future Past and $750,000 for X-Men: Apocalypse (not including bonuses), with her initial contract done suggesting she wants out puts her in the driver seat.  There is a catch though Jennifer Lawrence is actually the second actor to play the part, Rebecca Romijn has also played the part and with dozens of other under 30 year old actresses looking for an iconic role, Jennifer Lawrence doesn't have as much leverage as RDJ does.
The other side of the coin is also very true, how many actors have to spend 10 hours a day in a makeup chair getting body paint applied or removed.   Coupled with this are a number of horror stories from X-Men: First Class in which to add insult to injury not only did she spend 10 hours in a make chair they didn't actually use her in the days filming.   One of many reasons Matthew Vaughn was disliked.
My take, I have hard time imagining that with the right incentive, dollar figure, Jennifer Lawrence would turn down the part, I am reminded of the words of Alan Rickman "You don't make these movies because they are Shakespeare, you make these movies so you can [afford to] make Shakespeare."   I am probably paraphrasing a little, but it gets the point across.

Final some thought on the young 16 year-old Mateus Ward in having multiple auditions for the part of Peter Parker.   Here is a rumor I hope is not true, Mateus Ward just doesn't fit my perception of Peter Parker, he looks two damn young. In all honesty my 10 year-old son looks older than he does in many of his "recent" photo ops.   That's a problem.    I also think it is a problem for Sony, who rumor has it would prefer to go with Miles Morales.
The latest round of rumors suggest that Marvel has meet with several actors in the 16-17 year old range.   I would believe that short list includes Zackary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Chandler Riggs (The Walking dead) and... well the other actor that the right age is Jaden Smith.
The casting of Peter Parker (assuming they go that way) will tell us a lot about who is in charge of the Sony Marvel Collaboration.

Rumor - Has Captain Marvel been cast?

Gigi Edgley
A rumor making its was across the interweb over the last couple of days has suggested that Australian born actress Gigi Edgley has either signed on to play Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, or in final negotiations for the part.

Gigi Edgley is best known for portraying Chiana in the Sci-Fi Adventure TV show Farscape from 1999 to 2003.   Lately she has been the host of SyFy channel's Jim Hensen's Creature Shop Challenge and making the round to numerous America Sci-Fi and Comic shows.

Chiana
With as many names being floated out there for the part of Carol Danvers it is not surprising that some unusual or out of the box names also get floated by.

The rumors cite several insiders and point to the fact that Gigi Edgley has been extremely active in the past year increasing her American and European name recognition by appearing at nearly two dozen Sci-Fi and Comic over the past 18 months or so.  The number of appearances is highly unusual for a actor/character in her position of being nearly 10 years removed from her role as Chiana.

On a personal note when I first saw these rumors on March 19th I thought it was sort of suspicious that on the 16th Anniversary of Farscape that an actor from the show would be linked to a major part.  However as I thought about it over the weekend several parts of the rumors seem to ring true.

Marvel Studios has long history of hiring the actor that bests fits the role rather than a known quantity, so choosing Gigi over Katheryn Winnick or Katee Sackhoff isn't out of the question.   Gigi Edgley's roles have given her at least on the public side the look and attitude that I feel could make her a great Carol Danvers

Joss Whedon on Sunday confirmed in a Marvel Interview that Avengers: Age of Ultron will introduce us to characters we haven't glimpsed yet.   The trailer has given us Moondragon and either Hela or the Enchantress, so does the inclusion of Carol Danvers suddenly make sense?
As an aside I strongly believe that it is Hela in the Marvel Trailer as Marvel has been increasing her name recognition in the past six months.

In the end the more I thought about it, the more I grew to like the idea that Gigi Edgley could indeed be Captain Marvel.     Only time will tell if this rumor has any legs.

Rumor - Has Marvel found thier Captain Marvel - Part II

Posted by Jeff Labels: , ,

This morning I shared what I am sure will be the first of many rumors on Captain Marvel Casting.   Not even 24 hours later and we have more rumor and innuendos.

Jessica Chastain spoke with MTV while promoting her latest film, Intersteller.

“We’ve [Marvel] talked about aligning our forces in the future. And here’s the thing with me… If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?”
Originally cast as Maya Hansen in Iron Man 3 Jessica had to drop out due to scheduling conflict.   She has kept on solid terms with Marvel if she is talking to them about another part.   When pressed during the interview she added:

“There was one thing. I don’t want to say too much – but there was one thing, there was a possibility in the future of the character becoming… And I was like, ‘I understand that, but I want to do it now.’ ”
IMHO - She is not the actor I would cast for Carol Danvers, even if she went blonde she doesn't have the look.

So if not Captain Marvel than who?
Corystlia Amaqulin Maximoff, The Inhuman Princess who spends time with the Fantastic Four before marrying Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver).

We have heard rumors that we will be introduced to the Inhumans sooner rather than later.   There is potential that if Jessica were to sign a contract she could appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Rumor - Has Marvel already found thier Captain Marvel?

Katheryn Winnick
Several sites this morning citing anonymous sources are indicating that contrary to Kevin Feige comments at The Marvel Fan Event last week Marvel is in negotiations with Katheryn Winnick for the part of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

From here Bio on IMDB:
Canadian-born Katheryn Winnick stars in The History Channel's breakout cable TV series, Vikings (2013), now in its second season. Her role as "Lagertha" garnered her a nomination in the "Best Performance by a Lead Dramatic Actress" category at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards.

Katheryn is an accomplished martial artist, she received her first Black Belt at the ripe old age of 13. After competing in the Canadian Nationals, she proceeded to open several highly-successful Tae Kwon Do schools in and around Toronto. She later trained to become a licensed bodyguard and currently holds a third-degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, along with a second-degree Black Belt in Karate.
Vikings
Katheryn Winnick is not the only actress that has been rumored or linked to the role.  Others rumored for the part include Katee Sackhoff, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain,  Brie Larson and Margot Robbie many of which have had prior brushes with the Marvel Cinematic Universe but due to scheduling conflicts and other similar circumstances they needed to turn down offered roles.
